Hi, I’m Ilse!

I am Mexican, and I have been living out of suitcases since 2015 when I moved out to study cinematography and ended up running away with the circus and traveling the world non-stop.

I know, WTH?!

We will get to that.

Like many people, I never knew what I wanted to do when I grew up, the one thing I always had very clear is that I wanted to travel. Travel, travel, travel.

I have been a barista, a receptionist, a cashier, a resort entertainer, an Au Pair, a wardrobe assistant, and a backstage manager, and the one thing they all had in common is that either the job made me travel or the money it provided was being saved up for the next adventure.

So after 5 years of adventures I finally decided to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and do what I always enjoyed the most; share things I have learned from traveling, recommendations of my favorite restaurants, bars, bookshops, hotels, and more, from all around the world.

I love to be able to help family or friends when they plan a trip, so I want this space to be just that, me giving recommendations to a loved one, in the hopes that I can also help you find your new favorite breakfast spot in that new city.

Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you find information useful in some shape or form. If you do, please let me know, I would love to hear from you!

My circus story

When I initially moved out from my hometown to pursue my studies in cinematography, at one point I ended up unemployed and sending out twenty resumes per day, and one of them stuck.

I got a call to interview for a bilingual receptionist position for a Cirque du Soleil show coming into town, I needed a stable job to pay rent, not a three-week gig, but it sounded too fun not to take it.

So I interviewed and got the job.

After the three-week gig, I ended up following the show to the next city, Mexico City, where I continued to work with them for eight weeks and then followed them to Ecuador for another eight weeks.

I was HOOKED!

But sadly, that show was closing after Ecuador and I couldn’t follow them anymore.

Defeated, I went back home to Mexico, thinking and planning my next move.

That is how I came across Au Pairing, as the best way to move abroad to Europe without the need for crazy savings, as they would pay me to work, and I wouldn’t pay rent or food.

A couple of months later I was on my way to Germany, a place I had never been to, to live with a family I never met, speaking a language I never heard before.

Dumb or fearless? I will let you be the judge of that.

And as faith would have it when you relentlessly pursue what sets your soul on fire, things fell into place✨

Barely a month after arriving in Germany, a friend from the old Cirque show I worked with in Mexico, invited me to visit him in a new show he was performing in in Berlin, so I went.

After the show, I met up with my friend, and his colleague, who long story short is my now fiancée.

That night, we clicked immediately, started talking in November 2016, and haven’t stopped since.

After finishing my year as an Au Pair, he asked me to move in with him to tour around Germany for a year with a circus.

By the end of that year, he got contacted to go on a world tour with a new Cirque du Soleil show.

And that’s what we have been up to since 2019, touring the world with a circus show.

If you would have told me when I was 15 that this would be my life, I would almost not believe you, but I always knew I wanted to move around non-stop… so it makes sense.

Thanks to this incredible show we now both work on, we get to slow-travel the world, in such a unique way that allows us to get to know each city deeply and truly live in them.

We lived in North America for over a year, covering Canadian and USA destinations, we have lived in Japan for nine months, Seoul for three months, and are currently touring Europe.

I know, pinch me!

I currently work on the show part-time as a wardrobe assistant and a backstage manager, and I use every single second I’m not at the tent to work on this travel blog.

Where I aim to curate the best of the incredible destinations we get to work in and call home.

It’s honestly the best of all worlds, and I don’t know how I got so lucky.

I truly enjoy using my knowledge of living in these incredible cities for longer periods to curate ultimate guides and itineraries for friends and family, and through this blog, you are part of that!

So thank you for reading! 🫶

More about me:

  • I’m a big city girl, always have and probably always will be. If I could live anywhere it would be either Tokyo or London 🗼
  • I love exploring coffee shops everywhere I go. It’s the first thing I look for ☕️
  • Food is one of my favorite ways to experience a new destination. Which is why foodie cities like Rome, Barcelona and Osaka are some of my favorite places 🍣
  • I told my mom at 15 that I was going to live in Europe, even though I had never been. And I’m now in the process of getting my German passport.
  • I crossed the border from Mexico to USA everyday to go to school for high school. The most sleep deprived four years of my life.
  • I’m the crazy middle child 🙃

And that’s all I can think of for now! If you have any burning questions, just leave a comment, and I’ll happily get back to you.

Happy travels!
