After being lucky enough to visit Rome multiple times and spending over three months living here, I’ve explored Rome from up and down, stayed in different neighborhoods, and really gotten to know the city’s layout.

While considering where to stay in Rome might seem like a no-brainer—I mean, all the historic things are in the Centro Storico, right?—it’s still worth it to look at other neighborhoods to compare pros and cons, and see what works best for you.
Even as a first-time visitor to Rome, you might have different priorities for your trip than other first-timers.
You might want to be closer to the foodie neighborhood of Trastevere to always be steps away from a good dinner spot, or you might prefer to have the unmatched view of the Colosseum out your window.
We all like and prioritize different things, especially when traveling.
So to give you a good overview of the best areas to stay in Rome, here is a chart breaking down the main points, before we dig into all the details down below.

If what you always dreamed of when planning your Roman holiday was to wake up, go outside, and cross paths with the Trevi fountain on your morning coffee run, then Centro Storico is the place for you.
Centro Storico is a relatively wide area, comprising a few smaller quarters, where you will find many of Rome’s most iconic locations, such as the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza del Popolo.
- Pros: Centro Storico is the best place to stay in Rome for first-timers who want to feel deeply submerged into that ancient city feeling—staying in an old Italian building, in the heart of all the action, and a stone’s throw away from Rome’s most significant monuments.
Staying in the Centro Storico in Rome will literally put you in the center of the map, making it easy to explore a different area every day. Such as venturing North into Villa Borghese, East into Monti, and West into the Vatican. - Cons: Since most first-time travelers to Rome want to wake up and walk a few minutes to the main attractions, accommodations here tend to be pricier; you can expect very crowded streets and possibly noisy evenings.
Where to stay in Centro Storico, Rome:
- Budget: 59 Steps Trevi – Modern, clean, minimalist rooms, just around the corner from the Fontana di Trevi. The perfect sightseeing starting point.
- Mid-range: I Tre Moschettieri – Clean, elegant, and spacious bedrooms, just a few steps away from the iconic Fontana di Trevi. We stayed here before and loved how luxurious the room feels! The host is also very attentive and friendly.
- Luxury: Antico Albergo del Sole al Pantheon – Modern rooms with incredible views of the Pantheon (make sure you book the one that specifies it has a view). For the ultimate luxury getaway, book one of their beautiful suites!
Things to do in Centro Storico, Rome:
- Admire the stunning Piazza Navona, its “Four River Gods” fountain, and the beautiful Sant’Agnese in Agone Church
- Book a guided tour of the Colosseum and Imperial Forum
- Wander the picturesque Campo di Fiori
- Visit the iconic Fontana di Trevi (either really early in the day or really late at night for fewer crowds)
- Marvel at the architectural masterpiece that is the Pantheon and its dome
Monti: Best area to stay in Rome for residential vibes, close to the Colosseum
If, on the other hand, you want to be close to the action without feeling like you are right in the heart of it all—with the crowds and the constant humming of voices outside—Monti is the perfect place for you.
Monti is a neighborhood I learned about through a local friend who told me this is what real residential Rome looks like. And the magic of it is that it’s tucked away from plain sight, hidden right behind the Imperial Forum.
A little quiet oasis in the center of Rome, one of my favorite neighborhoods to explore, especially when I’m overstimulated from the city center crowds.
- Pros: Monti is a charming residential neighborhood with the same Centro Storico charm, with small winding cobblestone streets packed with cafes, casual eateries, and vintage shops, without the overwhelming noise and crowds from the city center.
This is the best place to stay in Rome for first timers who want to stay close to the Colosseum without the exorbitant price tag and over-touristy vibes. - Cons: Since this is mostly a residential area, the hotel offerings here are quite small, so if you want to stay here, you have to look in advance to be able to find a cute boutique hotel available.
Where to stay in Monti, Rome:
- Budget: Boho Suites – Rome Colosseum – Clean, minimalist, and—as the name suggests—cute boho-style bedrooms in the charming Monti. A great price for value, a short walk away from the Colosseum.
- Mid-range: Fantini Rooms-Monti – A highly rated accommodation in the heart of Monti offering modern and minimalist rooms with beautiful newly renovated bathrooms.
- Luxury: H10 Palazzo Galla – Quirky and modernly decorated rooms at the edge of Monti. Make sure to grab one of the rooms with a terrace overlooking the city for ultimate luxury!
Things to do in Monti, Rome:
- Catch unique views of the Colosseum as you explore the charming streets of Monti
- Stroll through the serene Parco del Colle Opio
- Go wine tasting at Vino Roma Wine Studio
- Grab a coffee at one of the many local cafes, like La Bottega del Cafe
- Finish the day with the perfect spritz at the Spritzeria Monti
Trastevere: Best area to stay in Rome for foodies
If, like me, one of your top priorities when traveling is being close to good food, then the lively neighborhood of Trastevere might be the place for you.
Home to some of the best places to eat cheap in Rome, Trastevere is a beloved neighborhood south of the Tiber where locals gather to dine as a family.
According to my born and raised Roman friend, this is where her family meets on Sundays for dinner at the popular Tonarello.
Besides being a foodies paradise, Trastevere is also a fun neighborhood for young travelers—or young in spirit—as the area comes alive at night with streets lined with patio tables and people sipping on Negronis and Aperol spritz.
- Pros: This is an incredibly fun area to come back to after a day of sightseeing, as you will always find something delicious to eat, and you will probably want to end up here for dinner multiple times during your trip to Rome.
Along the same note, if you want to close a day of exploring with a little drink at a local bar, this is the place to go, and it’s so easy to be persuaded to seize the night when you see the lively evening ambiance. - Cons: If what you want is peace and quiet and restful sleep, Trastevere might not be the best place, as mentioned, this place is known for its bar scene and nightlife, so it could get loud at night.
Where to stay in Trastevere, Rome:
- Budget: Trastevere Inn – Minimalist, yet cozy, affordable rooms on the North of Trastevere, making it easy to cross over the river to explore the Centro Storico and come back at night for dinner in the neighborhood.
- Mid-range: Giuditta in Trastevere – Young, modern bedrooms in a cute hotel, offering great breakfast on a stunning terrace. This Trastevere hotel is close to the river, making it easy to cross over to do some sightseeing. I would love to try this hotel next time I’m in Rome.
- Luxury: Elegantia Luxury Rooms Trastevere – Minimalist and luxuriously cozy bedrooms in a quieter part of Trastevere, while being close enough to join the action in the evenings, and venture out for dinner.
Things to do in Trastevere, Rome:
- Get a beautiful panoramic view of Rome from Janiculum Hill
- Eat like Romans do at the popular Tonarello
- Hunt for gems at the local vintage shops
- Book a guided tour to try some of the best Roman street food
- People watch while sipping the perfect Negroni at Big Hilda Public Bar (my go-to spot)
- Grab a late-night Trapizzino, a must-try Roman street food
Prati / Vatican Area: Best area to stay in Rome for a quieter area
Another one of the best areas to stay in Rome for quieter evenings, contrasting to the younger Trastevere and the buzzing Centro Storico, is somewhere in Prati, close to Vatican City.
On the other side of the river Tiber, behind Castel Sant’Angelo, you will find the Prati neighborhood, a more residential area of Rome, offering a calmer atmosphere while still having everything you need at your fingertips.
- Pros: Staying in Prati is a great idea if you want to be one of the first people lining up for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
This area of Rome is also much calmer and less crowded—not immediately next to the Vatican, of course—and feels a little bit more removed from the chaos of Rome’s city center, while still having great locally-loved restaurants all around, cafes, popular gelaterias, and bars.
If you are looking for unique things to do in Rome, one of my favorite bars in the city, Bibliobar, is just in front of Castel Sant’Angelo. - Cons: While you are very close to some unmissable Roman attractions like Vatican City, it can feel a little bit removed from other popular Roman sights, like the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Where to stay in Prati / Vatican Area, Rome:
- Budget: Nox – Simple, clean, affordable rooms, right behind the imposing Castel Sant’Angelo. Making it a perfect starting point to explore the castle, or beat the crowds at the Vatican Museums.
- Mid-range: NH Collection Roma Giustiniano – Simple, clean, spacious rooms, just a short 10-minute walk away from the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo.
- Luxury: Gv Suite Collection – San Pietro Dome – Minimalist, yet sophisticated bedrooms just a couple of blocks away from the Vatican. Book the Deluxe King Room for stunning city views and a relaxing bathtub.
Things to do in Prati / Vatican Area, Rome:
- Visit the imposing Castel Sant’Angelo (the first scene of Eat Pray Love in Rome was shot on the top of it)
- Picnic by the river with the view of the beautiful Sant’Angelo bridge and the castle at the back
- Visit the iconic Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter’s Basilica
- Sip a glass of wine at the end of the day at the locally-loved Biblio Bar by the river
- Grab a gelato at La Romana, one of the best gelaterias in town
Termini / Esquilino: Best area to stay in Rome for first-timers on a budget
If you are a traveller on a budget, but don’t want to sacrifice location, one of the best areas to stay in Rome is in Termini/Esquilino.
Close to Termini station, staying in this neighborhood makes it easy to arrive directly from the train station into your accommodation, without having to drag your luggage for too long along the cobblestone streets.
- Pros: Staying in Termini is a great way to find a more affordable accommodation while still being very well located, as this neighborhood is a short distance away from the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
Its proximity to the train station also makes it easier to arrive and depart the city.
You will also find some iconic locally-loved places to eat in Rome in this neighborhood, like Regoli Pasticceria, Bakery Rosciolli, and the iconic Gelatiera Fassi. - Cons: The one thing about staying in Termini/Esquilino is that it can feel a little bit gritty, and you might need to generally be more aware of your surroundings when walking around at night.
I have personally stayed here multiple times and never had any issues, but it’s good to always be a cautious traveler.
Where to stay in Termini / Esquilino, Rome:
- Budget: Numa Rome Linea – Beautiful, modern, affordable bedrooms across the street from Termini Station, offering self check-in for the ultimate travel ease
- Mid-range: Residenza 62 – A highly rated hotel with simple and classic bedrooms, two blocks away from the busy Termini Station
- Luxury: The Major Hotel – A modern hotel offering elegant rooms and a panoramic terrace, where breakfast can be enjoyed in summer, overlooking the beautiful Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica
Things to do in Termini / Esquilino, Rome:
- Do breakfast the Roman way, with a fluffy maritozzo and cappuccino at Regoli Pasticceria
- Try one of the many homemade flavors at the historic Gelateria Fassi
- Grab lunch at the bustling Mercato Centrale at Termini Station
- Take a stroll through the Giardino di Piazza Vittorio
- Visit the beautiful Palazzo Barberini

I personally like to be close to all the action, so I would normally opt for staying around Centro Storico, to be surrounded by all of Rome’s grandeur and main attractions, or Monti for the quieter vibes.
If you, on the other hand, would rather save some money on accommodation to spend it on tours or souvenirs, then Termini is a better fit for you.
If you are a foodie through and through and want to always be surrounded by great local meals, then Trastevere is the place to be, considering it can be louder at night.
And if a little bit more of peace and quiet is what you are after, and you don’t mind commuting or walking for longer, then Prati might be the best place to stay in Rome for you.
It really all depends on your priorities and preferences
