Here’s how to spend a day in Le Marais, Paris, featuring the area’s main attractions as well as great food, shopping, and coffee, for an authentic taste of the neighborhood.

Le Marais is one of Paris’ trendiest neighborhoods, where you can find the perfect mix of historic architecture, unique shops, charming local cafés, and locally-loved bistros.

I’m ashamed to admit that after over five visits to Paris, it wasn’t until work brought us to live here for over two months that I finally made it to Le Marais—and now, this is where I spend most of my days off.

To be fair, if you’re visiting Paris for the first time, and are short on time—as I normally was when visiting—it’s hard to spend a lot of time in Le Marais.

You’ll probably want to romanticize Paris to the maximum; spend time around the Eiffel Tower, Pont Alexandre III, and Jardin des Tuileries, which are in the opposite direction.

However, if you want to see a bit more of Paris’ local vibe, away from the fancy cafes of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, then Le Marais is the place to go for a well-rounded tourist experience.

Here you can find a perfect blend of beautiful historic architecture, tons of boutique shops, great local brands, a generous offering of restaurants, and some of the best coffee shops in Paris.

This combination of elements makes it easy and really enjoyable to spend a day in Le Marais, wandering around slowly and just soaking in those Parisian vibes.

How to spend a day in Le Marais: Where to eat, drink, and shop

I’ve drafted and edited this itinerary so many times because there are so many different ways to spend a day in Le Marais. And I’ve narrowed it down to this final version, keeping a curious traveler in mind.

This itinerary is aimed at someone who is looking to tick off some iconic Parisian spots on the list, as well as mixing in some “alternative” options, to keep a more local and unique feel to the day.

Treat yourself to breakfast at Carette

To start the day in Le Marais on a high note, make your way to Carette to try their famously decadent hot chocolate.

If you order a croissant with it, hot chocolate, it’s acceptable for breakfast, right?

Carette has a few locations in Paris, and luckily, the one in Le Marais is one of the best ones to visit for shorter waiting lines.

I’ll say that while being pricey, Carette’s hot chocolate truly lives up to the hype!

The hot chocolate is thick, but not excessively, well-balanced in flavor—not too bitter like Angelina’s, in my opinion—especially with the whipped cream on top. And even their croissants were good.

They offer a variety of other pastries and a whole food menu if you’re hungry for more than a croissant.

Stroll through the charming Place des Vosges

After that decadent start to the day, make sure to take the time to wander through the charming Place des Vosges square, which is right in front of Carrete.

This picturesque little courtyard is Paris’s oldest planned square. It used to be a fashionable and fancy place to live back in the 17th and 18th centuries—and I’m sure it’s still very expensive now—which has given the neighborhood its chic reputation.

This is a great spot to slow down, but since we are just starting the day, just take a stroll around the square, admire the cute red-brick houses that line it and its fountains, before heading out to continue your day in Le Marais.

Shop French brands: Caudalie and Bon Parfumeur

As we make our way more into the heart of Le Marais, you’ll inevitably walk past the Caudalie boutique, a well-known French skin care brand, so make sure to stop and stock up on French skin care goodies.

Some of my favorite items from here are their hand cream and their makeup-removing oil.

If you have some extra time during your trip and are looking for more unique things to do in Paris, there are also a few Caudalie spas in the city where you can book a facial.

Just across the street from Caudalie, you’ll find a tiny location of Bon Parfumeur, one of my favorite perfume brands for its simple yet beautiful scents, as well as for being quite affordable.

The idea behind Bon Parfumeur is quite simple: each perfume highlights three main notes. You can wear a perfume alone for a clean and simple scent, or you can layer it with a second one for a more unique, complex perfume.

My favorite scent is the 103 with notes of Tiaré, Jasmin, and Hibiscus. I’ve been using it for years now as my spring/summer perfume, and I love it! It’s floral, clean, and only the tiniest bit sweet.

Coffee at %Arabica: One of the best coffee shops in Paris

I know hot chocolate is great and all, but it’s no coffee. So, if, like me, you always need your caffeine fix, fear not, %Arabica is only a few steps away. Literally.

% Arabica is one of my absolute favorite coffee shops. The coffee is delicious, strong, and consistently prepared to perfection—my main pain point with many coffee shops.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, be sure to try their Kyoto latte—it’s so good!

In the name of having a slow travel day and enjoying your day in Le Marais, you could take your coffee “sur place” (to stay), and have it in their seating area in the back of the coffee shop.

If you want to keep going, take it to go and maybe walk up and down the nearby Rue de Sevigne to drink your coffee before our next stop.

Visit the free exhibition of the Carnavalet Museum

If you want to combine shopping and eating with some knowledge, a great thing to do while spending a day in Le Marais is to stop by the Carnavalet Museum.

The Carnavalet Museum is housed in two beautiful historic mansions in the heart of Le Marais, and it offers a free permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Paris, from its origins until the present day.

The exhibition showcases the city’s evolution through time, its inhabitants, art, and the significant events it has been through.

A very interesting and unique museum to visit while in Paris to learn more about the city we love.

You could spend anywhere from one to two and a half hours here, but since it’s free, you also don’t have to feel the pressure of seeing it all. Choose what interests you the most, if you want, and then move along.

I particularly loved the first section with all the old business signs of Paris.

Casual lunch at the popular L’As du Falafel

If you’re getting hungry, fear not, lunch is only a few steps away… almost everything is in this neighborhood, which I love!

For a casual lunch, make your way to L’As du Falafel for one of the best cheap eats in Paris.

Here you can get a hearty, packed with vegetables, delicious falafel pita for only 10 euros, and it’s honestly so good!

The falafel truly are some of the best ones I’ve ever had, which explains why there’s always a line. But don’t worry, the service is quick and efficient.

Hearty, healthy, filling, and super affordable!

Browse some of the best shops in Le Marais

One of the best things to do in Le Marais is to shop, shop, shop.

Whether it’s just window-shopping or really shopping, there are just too many good options all around.

A shop you cannot leave without visiting when in Le Marais, it’s the trendy L’Appartement Sezane for all your essential Paris chic closet pieces.

From the softest classic cardigans to feminine embroidered tops to the perfectly structured leather bags, Sezane is a one-stop shop for that effortless French style.

And for the guys, just across the street from Sezane, you will find Octobre, the brother brand for male attire. I got my fiancée a beautiful, burgundy wool sweater for Christmas, and it was a hit!

Another fun shop to visit while in the area is Fleux. Any of their many locations in the neighborhood will do. They are all packed with quirky little things, like pocket-sized puzzles, cute socks, and beautiful prints.

Just a little bit of everything. It’s the perfect place to find a unique souvenir from a local brand.

If you like to browse the racks looking for some treasure, some good shops to visit are Check It Vintage Burberry for second-hand designer goodies, and Free’P’Star, for normal second-hand.

Stop by the popular Merci boutique shop

An unmissable stop when spending a day in Le Marais is Merci, a curated boutique shop perfect for quality souvenir shopping.

Here you can find all sorts of things, from a curated clothing selection, fun little gadgets and toys, upstairs you have a home, stationery, and a toiletry section—you can seriously find about anything here.

A baguette-shaped pen? You got it! A hat that says “non, merci”? In multiple colors. 100% wool fluffy slippers? Duh! I got the leopard print ones, they are amazing!

The perfect, packing-friendly souvenir to get here is one—or a few—of their branded, cute tote bags. They come in two sizes and many colors and designs.

Afternoon pick-me-up at Boot Café

If you are in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, another great coffee shop in Le Marais worth trying is Boot Café.

While you might have seen this coffee shop all over Instagram, you’ll be happy to know that the facade is not only adorable, but the coffee is actually amazing!

The coffee shop is tiny, though, so hopefully you’re lucky enough to find an empty stool. If not, the coffee is still worth a try, so pick one up to go.

Wander around the historic Marché Couvert des Enfants Rouges

After all that shop-hopping, make your way to the Marché Couvert des Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered market in Paris, dating back to 1615(!).

Nowadays, it’s more of a modern food court, with multiple food stands offering everything from an oyster bar to burgers, Japanese food, and the popular “butcher shop”, the perfect spot for a “planche” or charcuterie board.

The market is quite small, smaller than I thought it would be, but it’s still fun to explore the alleys inside, and maybe grab a snack if something calls you.

Dinner at the popular Chez Janou bistro

To finish off the perfect day in Le Marais, it’s time for a classic French dinner, and there’s no better place in the area than the popular Chez Janou.

Chez Janou is a charming restaurant in the heart of Le Marais known for its Provençal-style dishes. The interior is warm and quirky, with colorful lamps and lots of eclectic art decorating the walls.

Here you can find all the French classics, from tartare to mussels, entrecote, and snails. Since they are famous for their comforting, Provençal-style cooking, I knew I needed to try the ratatouille, and I was right—it’s amazing!

My lovely waitress helped me choose a wine that best accompanied the dish, and she chose a CrozesHermitage, which I’d never had before, and it was delicious!

I visited at the awkward time of 4 pm, and had no issue doing a walk-in. However, if you want to eat at dinner time, around 7-8 pm, make sure to book in advance, as the place is popular with tourists and locals alike.

Final thoughts on a day in Le Marais: where to eat, drink, and shop

While Le Marais is such a fun neighborhood to explore while in Paris, it makes sense that a lot of travelers don’t get to spend too much time, or even make it here at all.

Since there aren’t any big attractions here, this is an area you’d normally visit as a tourist once you have covered all the main sights. And many people visiting run out of time by then.

If you’re lucky enough to have a longer Paris stay, or maybe it’s your second or third time in the city, then Le Marais is the perfect area to see a more local side of Paris.

This trendy Parisian neighborhood is the perfect place to channel those slow travel vibes, and simply be, wandering slowly, stopping often, and sitting down and leisurely enjoying your coffee while you people-watch the fascinating locals—my favorite activity.

From ticking off tourist classics like indulging in hot chocolate at Carette, to browsing the best shops in the area, and stopping at some of the top coffee shops, this itinerary has a little bit of everything to guarantee an incredible day in Le Marais, Paris.
